Momen Inersia untuk Bangun Beraturan

Gerak rotasi oleh gaya F tegak lurus

Gambar 6.12 melukiskan sebuah partikel bermassa m yang diberi gaya F tegak lurus jari-jari (R). Menurut hukum Newton benda akan dipercepat dengan percepatan searah dengan gaya. Percepatan ini dinamakan percepatan singgung (at). Hubungan antara gaya dan percepatan ini
adalah: F = m . at

Penjelasan mengenai momen inersia 

FR disebut momen gaya (σ) yang bekerja pada partikel yang berotasi dengan jari-jari R dan mR^2 disebut momen inersia partikel yang bermassa m dan berotasi dengan jari-jari R. Dari persamaan F . R = m . α . R2 diperoleh:

Persamaan ini mirip dengan Hukum II Newton (F = m . a). Dalam hal ini τ berperan seperti gaya pada gerak translasi, τ berperan seperti percepatan pada gerak translasi dan I berperan sebagai massa pada gerak translasi. Dengan demikian semakin besar nilai dari I semakin sulit
benda itu berotasi. Bagaimana dengan besaran yang lain pada gerak rotasi? Misalnya energi

Rumus energi kinetik 

Jika kita hubungkan dengan gerak rotasi v = ω . R maka energi kinetik partikel bermassa m yang melakukan gerak rotasi dapat dinyatakan:

Dalam hal ini ω berperan seperti kecepatan pada gerak translasi. Dari uraian di atas jelas ada hubungan antara gerak translasi dan gerak rotasi dan hubungan tersebut dapat Anda lihat pada tabel 6.2 berikut.
